The practice of infant baptism began in the early church as parents wanted to pass along their faith and values to their children. Today infant baptism is available to children under the age of reason or about seven. Children seven or older follow a different process for baptism. (see Sacraments of Initiation) If you are first time parents, this time is particularly exciting and you may have many questions regarding the baptism of your child. The following information will strive to answer many of your questions if you wish to have your child baptized at St. John the Apostle Parish.
Pope John Paul II called the family the domestic church. It is in the Christian home that the child first learns the values that are shared by the larger family of the Church. In the baptismal ritual the parents are questioned as to their readiness of passing on the faith to their children. The responsibility assumed by parents is also supported by the godparents and the whole Christian community so that the newly baptized can develop into a mature Christian adult.
Yes, only one parent must be Catholic. Except in rare cases, the non-Catholic parent must support the baptism of the child.
You must be a registered member of the parish or live within the boundaries of the parish to register your child for baptism. If you belong to another parish and wish to have your child baptized here, you must obtain written permission from the pastor of your parish that must include verification of baptismal preparation. There must be sufficient reason to baptize your child here if you belong to another parish.
Godparents (sponsors) play a very important role in the spiritual life of your child. They should serve as role models of the faith. They not only support your child but also you, the parents in your role as Christian parents. Godparents also represent the wider church community so to act as a sponsor is not only an honour but a tremendous responsibility.
Only one sponsor is required but if two are chosen, they must be one male and one female.
Sponsors must be fully initiated Catholics having received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist and be at least 16 years of age.
They must be Catholics in good standing and live a life of faith which befits the role.
A baptized person from another Christian denomination may be admitted as a Christian witness.
The Church requires that parents are duly prepared for the baptism. Therefore, sessions are provided before the baptism of your child.
Baptism Preparation sessions are intended to help parents:
You will be required to attend two preparation sessions before the baptism these dates will be given to you when you meet with the pastoral associate. Godparents are invited to join in the preparation sessions, if possible. If for good reason, both parents cannot attend, another adult connected to the child may accompany the parent.
We ask that you have a white baptismal garment for your child. The white garment is not only traditional but is also a liturgical symbol and part of the baptismal rite. If your child is older or you have difficulty with this, please let us know at the time of registration. The church supplies your child with the gift of a candle.
There is no fee for baptism for parishioners. We recommend, however, that you make a donation to the parish. The average donation is $50.00. A $25.00 administration fee is required for non-parishioners.
Baptisms occur about once a month except during Lent. Baptisms take place at a regular Sunday Mass or on Sunday afternoon. Certain Sundays have been designated according to the Liturgical Calendar. You will be given the dates when you register.
Call or email the Pastoral Office if you wish to have your child baptized. A member of our pastoral staff will meet with you in the parish offices at your convenience to arrange dates and fill out the necessary paperwork and answer any questions you may still have.
